BEASTLY
TYPE SPECIMEN 

The project was to design a type specimen book with an interesting subject. Beastly is a slab serif typeface designed by James Edmondson and published through OH no Type Co. in 2018. It was the custom typeface designed for the Lubalin 100 project, which was a project of the Herb Lubalin Study Center to celebrate Lubalin’s centenary. 

The chosen subject is Gloomy Sunday, a song that has been rumored to be linked to numerous cases of suicide among its listeners. The author, Rezso Seress, tried to capture his painful emotions in the song after his girlfriend left him. However, the song seems to be haunted by more than just the sorrow with which it was written.
